Sem gentileza – Futhi Ntshingila

Zola só tem uma opção no meio do apartheid: sobreviver. Ela vai ter que se defender de homens que, sem gentileza, querem tirar a inocência de sua filha: a coisa que ela mais tem medo. Obrigadas a morar nos guetos, as duas precisam fazer o que for possível para sobreviver, sem acabarem com sua integridade.

Apesar da sua falta de confiança nos homens, Zola conhecerá um homem que será sua salvação; e sua ruína.

Agora Mvelo, filha de Zola, tem que cuidar de uma mãe doente e sobreviver pelas duas.

Até que o episódio que sua mãe tanto temia finalmente aconteceu. E mudou a vida de Mvelo.

Eu adorei Sem gentileza. Sendo literatura sul-africana, não temos nenhum contato com ela. Os livros que lemos são, em sua maioria, norte-americanos e europeus (e, às vezes, nacionais). A literatura africana é incrível. Retrata bem aquelas situações que vemos em documentários, mas com um jeito muito mais pessoal.

Os nomes são difíceis de falar. Eles também colocam algumas frases na língua (eu não sei se é zulu, africâner, xhosa ou outra das dezenas de línguas e dialetos da África do Sul), mas colocam a tradução logo depois. Acho que devia ter um guia de pronúncia. Por experiência própria, posso dizer que é mais difícil que alemão.

Eu me encontrei com a Futhi. Eu fui no lançamento do livro dela e conversei com ela. Ela é uma fofa e me pediu pra dizer o que tinha achado do livro (se vocês virem no meu Twitter, eu escrevi algumas frases do livro e a marquei. Ela twittou um tempo depois: Obrigada, bonita). Então, a próxima parte vai ser escrita em inglês, só pra ela. Ela merece, ela é fofa demais.

Zola has only one option in the middle of the apartheid: survive. She has to defend herself from men that, without kindness, want to take her daughter’s inocence: what she’s the most afraid of. With no other option but to live in the ghettos, mother and daughter have to do what is possible to live, without losing their integrity.

Despite her lack of trust in men, Zola meets a man who would be her salvation; but also her ruin.

Now Mvelo, Zola’s daughter, has to take care of a sick mother and survive for both of them.

Until what Zola feared the most happens. And it changs Mvelo’s life.

I loved Sem gentileza. Unfortunatelly, we have no contact with South African literature. We are mostly used to reading North American and European books (and, sometimes, nationals). African literature is amazing. Whereas it shows a more personal point of view of situations only seen in documentaries.

The names are hard to speak. Moreover there also are a few sentences in the local language (I don’t know if it’s zulu, afrikaans, xhosa or which one of the tens of south-african lenguages and dialects), but the translation is right after that. I think there should be a pronuciation guide. By my own experience, I could say that it’s harder than german.

Well, Futhi, this last part is especially written for you. I hope you are reading it.
